about
When i first visited the Somme i was immediately overwhelmed by something that i wasn't expecting at all, that that open, hedgeless, empty landscape where the unbroken sky towers relentlessly and the sound of birdsong is seldom heard, didn't feel empty at all, it felt full. Those rolling acres felt full to bursting with the chattering souls of a million men and the white stone which clump and parade in every direction tell only half the story for every yard of soil marks an agony, a telegram, a dark grief never to heal. We become so accustomed to the idea that history disappears people, that previous generations fade and are washed out like chalk drawings on a pavement but here is an entire generation of men preserved together forever as part of the earth. I recognised then a knowledge which i'd had inside me all along but never managed to define, that the true emptiness was in those hollow spaces which those men had left behind and all those hundreds of memorials which stand in every town and village and station weren't just built to remember them by but, at least in part, as beacons to guide them home.

this is a living beast of a record, you can hear it heaving in feedback breaths in settlement and panting them out in old smoke, a feverish continuum of a record, each song an iteration of the last, I listen and I can't remember which song did what, cos they were all hauling for some golden horizon. eldudowski
