She was a Hollywood star in the sepia squint of cinema's earliest hours but a charlatan doctor promised to cure her pains with morphine and by the time he was done with her, her career was in ruins and she was a slave to the poppy.. The dark tunnel which followed led to notoriety, madness and gaol. On leaving prison, Alma developed pneumonia and slipped into a coma. On 31st January 1931 her final reel spooled out. She was Thirty three years old.
