about

When you're a child you fix it in your head that certain people are associated with certain things and for my Grandma, Elsie May Bramble one of those things was Red Admiral butterflies. We painted them for her and drew them on cards, they were one of her favourite things. She loved Primroses, Blackbirds and Red Admiral butterflies. That was something which was as certain to us then as the ground beneath our feet and the sky above our heads.
We held my Grandma's funeral at Carisbrooke church, the same church where she'd married her childhood sweetheart. It was a blanched, sunless winter's day but as the vicar finished speaking a shaft of sunlight broke through the stained glass and thrust out a golden arm and as it did so it lit upon a Red Admiral Butterfly that seemed to have appeared from nowhere and was perched upon the staging happily wafting its wings as though it were sunning itself on a long summer day.

Afterwards, when we returned to the house, I found on her dressing table amongst some of the little paintings and cards that we'd made her over the years and next to a card butterfly cut from a cereal packet an actual Red Admiral, dead, dessicated and perfectly composed. From that moment we have continued to see them at key moments and important times. No matter what the season is..
